The project took place at a commercial S&M establishment, where clients enacted a variety of fantasies and experienced the sexual pleasures of submission. Over a period of months, I worked as a quiet observer to the fetishized scenarios played out behind closed doors.
The work is an attempt to seriously document the men and women of this particular sex trade while striking a delicate balance between pornography and documentation. I wanted to assimilate into the working environment and portray what was happening but also wanted to take advantage of what was inherently an environment of pure theater. Where singular portraiture was the issue, I wanted to capture their fantasies about themselves. When photographing them in the process of working, I wanted the images to communicate something of the strangely tender nature that exists between the mistress or master and their client.
